Music legend Stevie Wonder got in a little warm-up before his Sunday night concert at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Wonder stopped by New Salem Baptist Church in north Minneapolis on Palm Sunday, strode from his front pew to the dais and unleashed a soulful interpretation of a gospel favorite.

“I just want to give all thanks to God for the opportunity to be here,” Wonder said to the congregation at New Salem, about 2 1/2 miles north of his nighttime venue. “My first celebration of this day is give praise to God.”

Wonder wowed ’em all as he sang “I Won’t Complain,” to the accompaniment of a mournful electric organ.

New Salem’s reverend, Jerry McAfee, and Wonder have been “friends for a long time, and they respect each other dearly,” said church official Holly Hollister.

Before Wonder left, he said he would be donating $10,000 to his good friend’s church.
