The Star Tribune's "Bees at the Brink" series was a winner at the 15th annual Online News Association conference on Saturday in Los Angeles.
The four-part series about bees endangered by environmental change won an Online Journalism Award for explanatory reporting in the large-circulation category.
It tied for that honor with "Drugging our Kids," a series by the San Jose Mercury News/Bay Area News Group. Other finalists in the category were projects by the New York Times and Toronto Globe and Mail.
"Bees at the Brink," written by Josephine Marcotty, featured photography and video, including an 18-minute documentary, by Renée Jones Schneider. The digital presentation team included Ray Grumney, Mark Boswell, Jeff Hargarten, Eddie Thomas, Josh Penrod, Dave Braunger, Jamie Hutt and Billy Steve Clayton.
The series has won several other honors, including an award of excellence from the Society for News Design in the category of digital/print project.
