St. Cloud State wins first-round game; UMD is next

St. Cloud State won its second playoff game in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 42-28 on Saturday in St. Cloud, and advanced to a second-round NCAA Division II showdown with top-ranked Minnesota Duluth.

St. Cloud State (10-2) racked up 485 yards offense in tying the 1989 Huskies squad for most victories in a season.

Huskies receiver Fred Williams tied a school record with 236 receiving yards in 13 receptions, and running back Dante Steward, who had not played since Oct. 16 against Southwest Minnesota State, carried the ball 29 times for 153 yards and four touchdowns.

St. Cloud State quarterback Philip Klaphake finished 14-for-22 for 252 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 17 times for 83 yards and a score.

"We are proud of our kids offensively and defensively sticking to the game plan and we did a good job of finding a way to win," Huskies coach Scott Underwood said.

The Huskies defense, meanwhile, recorded three sacks and limited the Chargers to 50 yards on the ground.

NCAA Division III Bethel 28, Wartburg 20: Logan Flannery ran for 137 of the Royals' 273 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns in a victory over the third-seeded Knights in Waverly, Iowa.

Quarterback Josh Aakre passed for 198 yards and two TDS and ran for 73 yards for Bethel (10-1), which will face Wheaton (Ill.) in the next round.
