Running back Michael Walker caught the winning pass as time ran out to give St. Cloud State a 51-49 upset victory over No. 2-ranked Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night in St. Cloud.
With 1:16 remaining in the game and St. Cloud State trailing 49-45, quarterback Phillip Klaphake led the Huskies 67 yards on nine plays to the 8-yard line. He took the final snap with three seconds remaining, scrambled left, reversed field and found Walker at the final gun.
Klaphake finished with a school-record 466 passing yards and had five TD throws. He also rushed for 80 yards and a TD in the matchup of NCAA Division II teams.
Bulldogs quarterback Chase Vogler passed for 164 yards and two TDs and ran for 120 yards -- including four TDs.
"We tried to run the ball, but it came down to having to throw it," Huskies coach Scott Underwood said. "We found some holes, and our offensive line executed very well and our receivers made some big plays."
Winona State 45, Upper Iowa 42: Rayon Simmons rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns to help the Warriors outlast the Peacocks in Fayette, Iowa. Upper Iowa pulled within 45-41 with 5:42 remaining on Cole Jaeschke's fifth TD pass of the game. The Peacocks got the ball back with 2:47 remaining, but the Warriors held on downs.
Bemidji State 35, Minn.-Crookston 2: Lance Rongstad passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the host Beavers end a three-game losing streak.
MSU Mankato 30, Concordia (St. Paul) 10: Mitch Brozovich passed for 175 yards and rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown as the host Mavericks remained unbeaten.
Northern State 45, MSU Moorhead 7: Jared Jacobsen passed for 280 yards and three TDs and John Hughes rushed for two TDs to lead the Wolves past the Dragons in Moorhead.
Wayne State 31, Augustana 27: The Vikings missed two field goals and an extra point as the host Wildcats held on for the victory in Wayne, Neb.
Sioux Falls 44, Southwest Minnesota State 21: The No. 25- ranked Cougars scored two fourth-quarter TDs to pull away in Sioux Falls. Taylor Perkins threw for five Cougars TDs.
UMACGreenville 49, Crown 18: Immanuel Gamble rushed for 207 yards to lead the Panthers past the Storm in Greenville, Ill. Wes Safford passed for 253 yards and three TDs for the Storm.
Northwestern (Roseville) 38, Minn.-Morris 14: Josh Balzer threw two TD passes and Chris Simon-Wallace rushed for two TDs to lead the host Eagles.
St. Scholastica 43, MacMurray 6: The Saints pulled away in the second half for the victory in Jacksonville, Ill. Jake Jensen rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown for the Saints.
WIACWis.-Eau Claire 21, Wis.-Stout 13: Austin Neu passed for two TDs and rushed for 93 yards and a TD to lead the host Blugolds to their first victory of the season. Eric Brown rushed for 135 yards for the Blue Devils.
Wis.-La Crosse 19, Wis.-Stevens Point 16: Jared Stan's 3-yard TD run with 16 seconds remaining lifted the visiting Eagles to the victory.
Wis.-Oshkosh 19, Wis.-River Falls 7: Nate Ray kicked four field goals to help the visiting Titans remain unbeaten. The Titans led 9-0 at halftime behind 27-, 25- and 37-yard field goals.
Wis.-Whitewater 27, Wis.-Platteville 26: The three-time defending NCAA Division III champion Warhawks rallied from a 14-point deficit and then stopped a two-point conversion attempt in the closing seconds to pull out the victory in Platteville.
Upper MidwestMartin Luther 17, Presentation 13: Luke Rothe passed for 227 yards and two TDs and rushed for 105 yards to lead the Knights to the victory in Aberdeen, S.D.
