Running back Michael Walker caught the winning pass as time ran out to give St. Cloud State a 51-49 upset victory over No. 2-ranked Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night in St. Cloud.
With 1:16 remaining in the game and St. Cloud State trailing 49-45, quarterback Phillip Klaphake led the Huskies 67 yards on nine plays to the 8-yard line. He took the final snap with three seconds remaining, scrambled left, reversed field and found Walker at the final gun.
Klaphake finished with a school-record 466 passing yards and had five TD throws. He also rushed for 80 yards and a TD in the matchup of NCAA Division II teams.
Bulldogs quarterback Chase Vogler passed for 164 yards and two TDs and ran for 120 yards -- including four TDs.
"We tried to run the ball, but it came down to having to throw it," Huskies coach Scott Underwood said. "We found some holes, and our offensive line executed very well and our receivers made some big plays."
Winona State 45, Upper Iowa 42: Rayon Simmons rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns to help the Warriors outlast the Peacocks in Fayette, Iowa. Upper Iowa pulled within 45-41 with 5:42 remaining on Cole Jaeschke's fifth TD pass of the game. The Peacocks got the ball back with 2:47 remaining, but the Warriors held on downs.
Bemidji State 35, Minn.-Crookston 2: Lance Rongstad passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the host Beavers end a three-game losing streak.
MSU Mankato 30, Concordia (St. Paul) 10: Mitch Brozovich passed for 175 yards and rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown as the host Mavericks remained unbeaten.
