St. Cloud State D-man among weekly WCHA award winners

Freshman Andrew Prochno of SCSU is the rookie of the week in the WCHA. Eriah Hayes of Minnesota State and Justin Schultz also earned weekly awards.

St. Cloud State defenseman Andrew Prochno is the WCHA's rookie of the week. The 5-11, 185-pound Prochno had one goal and three assists as the Huskies split with North Dakota, winning 3-1 and losing 3-2.

Prochno, of Shorewood, Minn., had two assists in the first game and a goal and an assist i the second game. He helped SCSU's penalty killers hold North Dakota to zero-for-four on the power play, had five shots on net and blocked two shots. He played high school hockey at Minnetonka last season.

HAT TRICK RECOGNIZED

Eriah Hayes, a 6-4 junior right wing for Minnesota State, is the offensive player of the week. He had a hat trick as the purple Mavericks beat Nebraska Omaha 5-4 in overtime on Saturday. He is from La Crescent, Minn.

Hayes also had an assist on MSU's only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to UNO on Friday.

SCHULTZ AMAZING PLUS-7

Junior defenseman Justin Schultz of Wisconsin is the defensive player of the week. He was a plus-7 -- meaning he was on the ice for every goal his team scored -- as the Badgers swept Alaska Anchorage 4-0 and 3-2.

He had a goal and two assists in the first game, two assists in the second.

He leading scorer in the nation among defensemen in scoring with 12 goals and 25 assists for 37 points.

Among other players nominated for this award was Gophers forward Nate Condon, who had a short-handed goal in his team's split with Colorado College. He also was one reason the Gophers' penalty killers held CC to 0-for-8 on the power play.

Other nominees were two goalies, CC sophomore Josh Thorimbert and St. Cloud State freshman Ryan Faragher.

Thorimbert stopped 38 shots on Friday when CC beat the Gophers 2-1 and had 35 saves on Saturday when the 'U' reversed the score.

Lucia said on his weekly radio show on Monday that the Gophers recruited Thorimbert, a sophomore from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but didn't have a roster spot for him.
