UMPHREY'S MCGEE
Friday-next Sunday: Like any smart jam band, the Midwest's most popular jammers have released more live albums (five) than studio discs (three). Started at the University of Notre Dame, the group eventually relocated to Chicago, hardly a bastion for jam bands. While the Umphreys may not be the most critically acclaimed group in the Windy City, they've proven their effectiveness in concert with prog-rock aspirations and long-winded guitar workouts. Now the group returns for a three-night stand. (8 p.m. Fri., 7 p.m. Sat., 8 p.m. next Sun. $20. First Avenue, 701 1st Ave. N., Mpls., 612-338-8388.)
