Spotlight: Stravinsky and Wuorinen at St. Paul Chamber Orchestra

September 5, 2008 at 10:23PM

ST. PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Friday-Saturday: Igor Stravinsky and the American composer Charles Wuorinen play well together. (In the mid-'90s, Wuorinen's "Reliquary for Igor Stravinsky," based on the Russian's late sketches, was choreographed by Peter Martins in the style of Stravinsky's terpsichorean soulmate, George Balanchine.) This week's St. Paul Chamber Orchestra program pairs Wuorinen's recent "Flying to Kahani" with Stravinsky's "Movements" for piano and orchestra, both featuring the admirable pianism of Peter Serkin. Conductor Roberto Abbado closes with Haydn's tympanum-tickling Symphony No. 103 ("Drum Roll"). (10:30 a.m. & 8 p.m. Fri., 8 p.m. Sat. $11-$59. Ordway Center, 5th and Washington Sts., St. Paul. 612-291-1144 or www.thespco.org.)
