Spotlight: Babyface

KENNY (BABYFACE) EDMONDS

Friday: Babyface is a Grammy-winning songwriter, a Grammy-winning producer and a hit artist in his own right. So it seemed a little odd last year when he put out an album of covers of 1970s pop hits, "Playlist." These days, that's what mature artists (he's 49) have to do to get attention. The two new songs on the CD are impressive, especially the Bob Dylan-evoking, Iraq- inspired "Soldier's Song." In concert, you might hear him sing a little Dylan, James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg, but also expect him to show his own gift for melody on such classics as "Breathe Again" (Toni Braxton), "End of the Road" (Boyz II Men) and "Everytime I Close My Eyes" (his solo hit). (9 p.m. Fri. $45. Trocaderos, 107 3rd Av. N., Mpls. 612-465-0440.)
