Last year the Vikings delayed the inevitable overhaul of their aging roster, instead trotting out Donovan McNabb for one last stab at competitiveness. The team finished 3-13. Last weekend's NFL rookie scouting combine trumpeted the ceremonial beginning of a new offseason, one that will see the Vikes in full-on rebuilding mode. Here's how they should move forward.

LINEBACKER

Out: E.J. Henderson (free agent)

In: Erin Henderson. The free agent was quietly productive in his first year as a Vikes starter; he deserves a multiyear deal. Drafting a youngster is essential, as Chad Greenway's recent extension already looks like a mistake.

DEFENSIVE SECONDARY

Out: Cedric Griffin, Chris Cook ($5.75 million saved); Tyrell Johnson (free agent)

In: Cortland Finnegan or Brandon Carr. Splurge on a big-name free agent.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Out: Steve Hutchinson, Anthony Herrera ($10.6 million saved)

In: Matt Kalil. Should Andrew Luck and RGIII go with the first two picks, the team needs to nab Kalil; he's a Joe Thomas/Jake Long-tier prospect.

TIGHT END

Out: Visanthe Shiancoe (free agent)

In: Michael Egnew. Freakish tight ends are en vogue (Gronk, Graham, etc.). A third-rounder pairs the 6-foot-5 Engew -- a Missouri product who runs a 4.6 forty -- with promising sophomore Kyle Rudolph.

WIDE RECEIVER

In: A free agent and a premium draft choice. Bring in a vet like Brandon Lloyd or Vincent Jackson plus an early second-round talent like Alshon Jeffery or Mohamed Sanu. If not, Christian Ponder's development languishes.
