Indiana gives Crean $23.6M for 10 years New Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean got the job security he wanted, signing a 10-year contract worth at least $23.6 million on Tuesday.
The deal includes an annual base salary of $600,000 and additional payments for promotional work, school officials said. He will receive $1.4 million this season from outside income, a total that will increase slightly each year of the contract. His contract includes a provision that allows Indiana to fire him if he or his staff commit NCAA infractions.

Nadal, Ivanovic are top seeds at Open Rafael Nadal was seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open on Tuesday, making it the first time since January 2004 that a man other than Roger Federer holds that top spot at a Grand Slam tournament. Ana Ivanovic is the No. 1 seed on the women's side. The tournament begins Aug. 25, and the draw will be announced Thursday.
Federer has won the past four U.S. Open titles.
HORSE RACING
Exercise rider at Saratoga dies Parker Buckley, an exercise rider for trainer Steve Asmussen, has died after being injured in a riding accident at Saratoga Race Course. Buckley suffered a head injury at the upstate New York track when he was unseated on the training track.
AROUND THE HORN
Golf: Robbie Fillmore shot 5-under-par 65 on the No. 4 course at Pinehurst and won the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, N.C. Fillmore had an opening 69 on Pinehurst No. 2, giving him a total of 6-under 134. He leads the group of 64 players who will start the match-play portion today. Two Minneapolis golfers were in the field: Peter Croonquist was at 5 over, and Parker Pemberton was 14 over. Croonquist was one of a 26-player playoff for the final two berths in match play. It will played at No. 4 beginning this morning.
