Sports briefs: Te'o runs faster 40 at Notre Dame pro day

Manti Te'o ran a little better on his home field than he did at the NFL combine, lowering his 40-yard time by more than a tenth of a second during Notre Dame's pro day.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up posted a best time of 4.69, bettering the disappointing mark of 4.82 he put up at the combine in Indianapolis last month.

Te'o says he was pleased by his performance, saying he expected to run faster. Te'o says he's met with some NFL teams, saying they've asked about his highly-publicized online romance that turned out to be a hoax. He says some ask about it briefly, others go more in depth.

In other NFL news: The Raiders signed free agent tackle Alex Barron to a contract. Barron was a first-round pick by St. Louis in 2005. He has played 87 games and has experience at both left and right tackle. ... The Browns signed free agent quarterback Jason Campbell to a two-year contract, bringing the veteran in to provide competition for Brandon Weeden.

Duke assistant Chris Collins interviewed for the head coach opening at Northwestern, according to sources. Collins, a native of the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, Ill. — roughly 15 miles from the Northwestern campus in Evanston. He's the son of Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins.

The former Mr. Basketball in Illinois was a star for Duke from 1993-96 before starting a coaching career that included stints with WNBA's Detroit Shock and with Tommy Amaker's staff at Seton Hall. He joined Mike Krzyzewski's staff in 2000.

In other college basketball news: Buffalo hired Bobby Hurley to take over as coach. Hurley completed his first season as an associate coach at Rhode Island this month, working under his brother, Dan Hurley. He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Wagner, also with Dan serving as head coach.

Television: ESPN is staying in the family in giving its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Robin Roberts at its annual ESPY awards this summer.The "Good Morning America" anchor and former ESPN anchor is being saluted for how she kept viewers involved in her treatments for two serious illnesses. She had breast cancer in 2007 and last year had to undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat a rare blood disorder.

Soccer: Brad Guzan swatted away shot after shot and the Americans hung on for a 0-0 draw with Mexico on Tuesday night, earning only their second point in a World Cup qualifier at Azteca Stadium. The tie moves the U.S. into third place in World Cup qualifying for the North and Central American and Caribbean region, one point behind Panama and behind Costa Rica on goal difference. The Americans and Costa Ricans both have four points, but the Ticos are ahead on goal difference.

Tennis: Sam Querrey lost his fourth-round match at the Sony Open, and for the first time the tournament will have no American in the men's quarterfinals. Querrey lost to Tomas Berdych 6-1, 6-1. In another fourth-round match, Tommy Haas became the oldest man to beat a No. 1-ranked player in 30 years. Eight days shy of his 35th birthday, Haas defeated three-time champion Novak Djokovic, 6-2, 6-4.
