High school senior Vashti Cunningham, daughter of former Vikings quarterback Randall Cunningham, became the youngest champion ever at the world indoor track and field championships on Sunday in Portland, Ore.

Her winning jump of 6 feet, 5 inches is the latest mark in the stunning rise of the 18-year-old Cunningham, who set the American high school record in the event at the U.S. indoor championships last weekend.

Randall Cunningham, who is also his daughter's coach, leapt to his feet when she was pronounced the winner, and the crowd at the Portland Convention Center jumped with him.

"The people have been so supportive of her," Randall Cunningham said in a phone interview afterward. "Vashti has never had people clap when she's about to jump. And they know exactly when to clap. They're like the Seattle Seahawks — the 12th man."

She'll next try to make the U.S. team for the Olympics. But first she has to graduate from high school in Las Vegas.

"I'm excited on the inside but keeping it calm on the outside," she said.

Brewers outfielder Liriano hit in face

Milwaukee outfielder Rymer Liriano suffered multiple facial fractures Sunday when he was hit in the face with a pitch.

Liriano was carried off the field on a backboard. The team said he was expected to be hospitalized overnight.

A pitch from Matt West of the Los Angeles Dodgers went under the brim of Liriano's batting helmet and hit him on the left side of the face.

Hamilton to get back on field

• Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, who has been out with a sore left knee since the start of camp, said he's pain-free and expects to be back on the field this week. He's still not projected to be available for the first month of the season.

• Chone Figgins will retire Monday after signing a one-day contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Figgins, 38, played eight of his 12 major league seasons with the Angels.

• Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano announced his retirement after 14 seasons. He was signed by Toronto but had visa problems and didn't report to spring training.

Goalie sets record, then gives up a goal

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon set a Serie A record on Sunday for not conceding a goal, reaching 974 consecutive minutes before he was finally beaten — by a penalty kick.

Buffon broke the 22-year-old record in the fourth minute of Juventus' 4-1 victory over Torino when he reached 930 minutes.

Forty-four minutes after overtaking Sebastiano Rossi's record, Buffon faced a 48th-minute penalty shot that was made by Andrea Belotti.

The "winners" have all been Turkeys, no matter the honor's name.
