Julie Ertz scored on a header in the 87th minute, making certain the United States extended its unbeaten streak to 30 games with a 1-0 victory over Spain in the SheBelieves Cup on Sunday in Harrison, N.J.

Christen Press sent a crossing pass from the left flank on a free kick, and Ertz, running at full speed, nodded it past Sandra Panos. The Spanish goalkeeper got a hand on the shot but could not prevent it from going into the net.

"Julie is always a priority on set pieces," Press said after the United States won its seventh straight game in 2020 in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics. "I feel like if you give her a ball, she can compete for it. It doesn't matter who she is playing against. She is just world class."

U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made three saves in her second shutout of the tournament. She blanked England 2-0 on Wednesday in Orlando, Fla.

The win gave the United States six points and put it in position to win the four-team tournament with a tie against winless Japan on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.

The United States had great scoring chances, only to be stopped by Panos. She pushed a shot by Megan Rapinoe over the crossbar in the 32nd minute and made a diving stop on a long-range blast by Samantha Mewis in the 60th minute.

England beat Japan 1-0 in the opener of the doubleheader at Red Bull Stadium, which was filled to its capacity of 25,189.

Portland fans show their compassion

MLS' expansion team from Nashville felt the love Sunday in Portland.

The Timbers beat the Nashville 1-0, but the fans were more generous in the aftermath of tornadoes that killed 24 in Tennessee. They displayed a large banner that said "Rose City (heart) Music City." Players on both sides wore badges on their jerseys with the initials NGUOY, for Never Give Up In You. The jerseys were to be auctioned after the game with the proceeds going to the recovery effort. The Timbers also pledged $15 of every general admission ticket sold to tornado relief.

Cancellation sets up a fabulous finish

A three-way fight for the men's World Cup overall title was ensured Sunday when a super-G race in Kvitfjell, Norweay, was canceled because of weather.

Just two races — and a maximum 200 points to be won — remain in an early finish to the season next weekend in Slovenia. The scheduled March 18-22 finals meeting in northern Italy was canceled Friday because of the spreading coronavirus.

Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has a 54-point lead over Alexis Pinturault of France and 161 over his teammate Henrik Kristoffersen. A giant slalom and slalom next weekend will settle it.

Sunday's cancellation handed the season super-G title to Mauro Caviezel of Switzerland.
