Sports briefly: U.S. hands Russia first defeat in world championship

The United States came back three times to hand Russia its first defeat 5-3 and top Group A with its sixth straight win at the ice hockey world championship on Tuesday.

Kevin Hayes scored two goals in his second game at the tournament, and Edina native Anders Lee earned the match-winner as the U.S. outshot Russia by 35-19.

They head to the quarterfinals Thursday, when the U.S. will play Finland, and Russia will meet the Czech Republic.

Two-time defending champion Canada will play Germany, and Sweden takes on Switzerland. Group B leader Canada beat fourth-placed Finland 5-2. Switzerland avoided playing Russia by defeating the Czech Republic 3-1 to clinch the second spot in Group B.

ESPN announces lineup

ESPN formally unveiled its new daytime lineup and the daytime versions of "SportsCenter" are being de-emphasized as the network embraces personality-driven ways to fill the time between sporting events. Here's what the daytime lineup will look like starting in January:

6-9 a.m.: New Mike Greenberg show (begins Jan. 1). It will air live from a studio in Manhattan and feature Greenberg and several full-time co-hosts.; 9-11 a.m.: "First Take"; 11 a.m.-noon: A new live show featuring Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre.

From there, ESPN's afternoon and early-evening lineup will look much like it does now: noon-12:30: "Outside the Lines"; 12:30-2: "NFL Live" (expanded to 90 minutes starting May 22); 2-2:30: "The Jump."; 2:30-3: "SportsNation"; 3:30-4: "Highly Questionable"; 4-4:30: "Around the Horn"; 4:30-5: "Pardon the Interruption"; 5-6: "SC6" with Jemele Hill and Michael Smith. 6 p.m. ''SportsCenter''.

Also of note: Mike Golic, Greenberg's longtime radio/TV co-host, will be getting a new ESPN Radio show with Trey Wingo.

... Peyton Manning will take the stage to host the ESPY Awards on July 12. ... ESPN has tapped Beth Mowins to call the second part of a season-opening "Monday Night Football" doubleheader in September, making her the first woman do play-by-play duties on an NFL game in 30 years.

Tennis: Maria Sharapova retired from her Italian Open match citing an apparent left thigh injury hours after learning she would not be granted a wild card into the French Open. The retirement came two hours after French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli announced he would not invite Sharapova to Roland Garros because of her past doping ban. ... In other Italian Open action, top-ranked Andy Murray was eliminated by Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4.

NFL: Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor charge from an altercation this year. Police said he kicked and used head-butting as he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a hotel employee.
