Sports briefly: Royals hire Mike Matheny as manager

The Kansas City Royals hired Mike Matheny on Thursday, bringing in a manager who took the cross-state Cardinals to the World Series six years ago before a three-season swoon cost him his job.

Matheny, 39, went 591-474 with St. Louis and was the first manager to reach the postseason his first four seasons. The Cardinals reached the World Series in 2013, losing to the Red Sox, but Matheny was fired in July 2018 with the team in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.

• Former Rangers star Josh Hamilton is prohibited from seeing or talking to any of his children for the rest of the year, according to a temporary protective order.

• The Yankees declined their 2020 option for Edwin Encarnacion, making the veteran slugger a free agent.

• The White Sox traded catcher Welington Castillo to Texas for minor league outfielder Jonah McReynolds.

FOOTBALL

Baylor still perfect

Charlie Brewer threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns and John Mayers kicked a go-ahead 36-yard field goal to help No. 12 Baylor defeat visiting West Virginia 17-14.

The Bears (8-0, 5-0 Big 12), who in 2017 went 1-11, remained one of eight unbeaten FBS teams despite taking eight sacks by the Mountaineers (3-5, 1-4).

• Wesley Kennedy ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns and Georgia Southern (5-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) upset No. 20 Appalachian State, winning 24-21 in Boone, N.C. to hand the Mountaineers (7-1, 4-1) their first loss.

• Michigan State star linebacker Joe Bachie was declared ineligible by the Big Ten after testing positive for a banned supplement.

BASKETBALL

Ionescu heads team

Oregon's Sabrina Ionescu, the NCAA career leader for triple-doubles, heads up the Associated Press preseason All-America team. She is joined by Baylor's Lauren Cox, Texas A&M's Chennedy Carter, Maryland's Kaila Charles and Miami's Beatrice Mompremier.

Scheffler leads

Scottie Scheffler closed with a bogey for a 9-under 62 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Tour's inaugural Bermuda Championship.

Scheffler played his opening nine at Port Royal Golf Club in 6-under 29, making an eagle on the par-5 17th. Wes Roach was second. He eagled the par-5 seventh, but also finished with a bogey on No. 9.

• Li Haotong gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about with an 8-under 64 for a one-shot lead in the HSBC Champions in Singapore. Defending champion Xander Schauffele turned a birdie chance into a three-putt bogey late and settled for a 66, joining a group that included Adam Scott and Sungjae Im. Rory McIlroy shot 67.

• Nelly Korda and Mi Jung Hur each shot 6-under 66 to share the lead at the Swinging Skirts in Taiwan.

AROUND THE HORN

Tennis: Top-ranked Ash Barty reached the semifinals of the WTA Finals, beating Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-2.

College hockey: Aarne Talvitie had a goal and two assists and host Penn State beat Wisconsin 6-1 in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Minnesota scene: Senior midfielder Nikki Albrecht of the Gophers was named to the All-Big Ten women's soccer third team and teammate Katie Duong, a midfielder, was picked for the all-freshmen team.
