Tom Brady, 42, reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with the New England Patriots that runs through the 2021 season. The new deal increases Brady's 2019 income by about $8 million, to $23 million. It adds two additional seasons at prospective salaries of, according to the league-owned NFL Network, $30 million in 2020 and $32 million in 2021.

That makes the extension potentially worth $70 million, although adjustments are possible along the way.

Jaguars sign ex-Viking Thomas

The Jaguars signed former Vikings running back Roc Thomas, who is suspended for the first three games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The Jaguars are down two running backs — rookie Ryquell Armstead (quadriceps) and veteran Thomas Rawls (hamstring) — heading into joint practices and their preseason opener in Baltimore. Current Jaguars offensive coordinator John DeFilippo coached Thomas in Minnesota.

Thomas was sentenced to three years of probation in May after pleading guilty to felony marijuana possession. He was arrested in January after police found 143 grams of the drug in his apartment. Officers also confiscated $15,802 and a .45-caliber handgun, according to a criminal complaint. He can participate in preseason practices and games.

Hamilton tops Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton overtook Max Verstappen near the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix to earn his 81st Formula One race victory and extend his championship lead. The Mercedes driver is now only 10 wins behind seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher's record of 91.

Mercedes made a strategic gamble with about 20 laps to go to bring Hamilton in for a second tire change, while Red Bull decided to keep Verstappen out on track. It proved a Mercedes masterstroke. The much quicker tires helped Hamilton swallow up Verstappen's 20-second lead and he finally got past the Red Bull on lap 67 of 70, having failed to overtake him several times earlier in the race.

Sebastian Vettel finished behind Verstappen in third place for Ferrari.

... John Force raced to his record-extending 150th Funny Car victory in the NHRA Northwest Nationals. The 70-year-old Force won for the first time since the Colorado event last year, beating Ron Capps in the final with a 3.971-second run at 320.58 mph in the Peak Auto Lighting Chevrolet. Austin Prock won in Top Fuel and Matt Hartford topped the Pro Stock field.
