Mikaela Shiffrin ended her six-race winning streak in World Cup slaloms Sunday when she stunned her rivals by skiing off course with a lead of a full second in sight of the finish.
Shiffrin lost balance with six gates left, handing victory to Petra Vlhova of Slovakia in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
It was the final World Cup slalom before the Feb. 14 medal race at Olympics.
She retained her big leads in the World Cup overall and slalom standings, but she's in a slump. Across all disciplines, she hasn't won in six races after opening the season with five victories in a row. She was asked how she feels heading to the Olympics.
"Pretty heartbroken," she said.
Hirscher wins again
Marcel Hirscher took his 55th World Cup victory, in a gialt slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. U.S. skier Ted Ligety placed third, his first podium finish of the season.
Around the horn
Baseball: Francisco Rodriguez, a six-time All-Star closer who slumped to a 7.82 ERA last season for Detroit, agreed to a minor league contract with Philadelphia.
Snowboarding: Olympic champ Iouri Podladtchikov, a Russian who competes for Switzerland, broke his nose in a halfpipe fall at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. Scans for brain and neck injuries showed no broken bones.
