Sports briefly: Matsuyama wins HSBC Champions by 7

Hideki Matsuyama never gave anyone a chance Sunday, closing with a 6-under 66 to win the HSBC Champions and become the first Asian winner in the 18 years of the World Golf Championships.

It was only fitting that Matsuyama won the WGC billed as "Asia's major."

The 24-year-old Matsuyama hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th hole and still finished with a par, holing an 18-foot putt. That gave him a seven-shot victory over British Open champion Henrik Stenson (65) and Daniel Berger (69).

Gibble takes Sanderson Farms crown

Cody Gribble won the Sanderson Farms Championship for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 65 for a four-stroke victory.

The 26-year-old rookie started the day a stroke behind playing partners Chris Kirk and Luke List. Kirk and List each shot 70 to tie for second with Greg Owen (68).

... Tom Pernice Jr. won the first playoff event in PGA Tour Champions history, beating Colin Montgomerie by a stroke at Sherwood in the PowerShares QQQ Championship. The 57-year-old Pernice closed with a 2-under 70. The two-time PGA Tour winner had a 13-under 203 total. He shot a 64 on Saturday for a share of the lead with Brandt Jobe.Scott Dunlap was third at 10 under after a 67.

... Shanshan Feng won the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia. The 27-year-old Chinese star beat Suzann Pettersen by three strokes at TPC Kuala Lumpur, shooting a 4-under 67 after finishing off a third-round 64 in the morning.

Hamilton wins in Mexico

Lewis Hamilton survived a nervous start to win the Mexican Grand Prix, grabbing another victory he needs as he chases Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg for the Formula One season championship.

But with a 19-point deficit to Rosberg and just two races left, Hamilton is running out of time. Rosberg finished second. Rosberg can still win his first career championship if he gets a second- and third-place finish in the final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

... John Force beat daughter Courtney Force in the Funny Car final at the NHRA Toyota Nationals, Antron Brown wrapped up his third Top Fuel season title, Steve Torrence won the Top Fuel event and Shane Gray topped the Pro Stock field.

Tennis

Cibulkova upsets Kerber

Dominka Cibulkova put on a stunning show of unflappable tennis to upset top-ranked Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 to win the WTA Finals title in Singapore.

The seventh-seeded Cibulkova, making her debut at the WTA Finals this week, picked the right match to win against Kerber during the week. The two met in the first match of the round-robin stage last Sunday with Kerber prevailing 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3.

... Andy Murray closed in on the No. 1 ranking by winning his third straight ATP title at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria. The Scot can overtake Novak Djokovic atop the ATP rankings next week if he wins the Paris Masters and the Serb doesn't reach the final. Murray defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6 (6) for his personal-best seventh title of the season, and 42nd overall. Djokovic has also won seven events this year.

... Marin Cilic beat Kei Nishikori 6-1, 7-6 (5) to win the Swiss Indoors title.
