Sports briefly: Haloti Ngata retires at the top — literally

Haloti Ngata found a unique way to announce his retirement from the NFL: From atop Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 35-year-old Ngata, who played with the Eagles last season following three years with the Lions, was at his best with Baltimore. He made two All-Pro teams and five Pro Bowls with the Ravens in nine seasons after being a first-round draft pick in 2006. He won a Super Bowl with them in February 2013.

The defensive tackle unfurled a banner while at the top of the mountain and posted his retirement message on Instagram.

... The Packers re-signed veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis. A 13-year veteran, Lewis played in all 16 games for the team last season, but had only three receptions for 39 yards.

... The Bengals released oft-suspended linebacker Vontaze Burfict.In his seven years with the Bengals, he was suspended by the NFL to start each of the past three seasons, mostly for egregious hits.

... Former Minnesota State Mankato lineman Chris Reed, who spent the past four seasons with the Jaguars, signed with the Dolphins. ... The Rams agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Jaguars starting quarterback Blake Bortles. ... Robin Roberts is returning to sports for one night, hosting ABC's coverage of the first round of the NFL draft on April 25.

Gonzalez joins Yanks

Gio Gonzalez and the Yankees agreed to a minor league contract If added to the 40-man roster, the 33-year-old lefty would get a $3 million salary while in the major leagues. ... Rangers lefthander Yohander Mendez will be out until June with a ulnar collateral ligament sprain.

Media: ESPN and UFC announced that the mixed martial arts company's pay-per-view events will be broadcast exclusively on the network's ESPN Plus digital subscription service through 2025, starting with UFC 236 on April 13.

College football: Texas A&M University-Commerce players Jay Bias and Xavier Morris are recovering in a Florida hospital after being shot during a robbery. A statement from the university says Bias and Morris were in Miami for spring break.

Tennis: David Norfeldt, a sophomore tennis player at the University of San Diego, was suspended and fined after admitting to having bet on matches.
