Sports briefly: Cam Newton tweets an apology to woman reporter

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton apologized in a Twitter video post Thursday night for sexist comments made to a female reporter.

"After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women," he said at the start of the nearly two-minute video.

"To be honest, that was not my intentions. And if you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you."

On Wednesday when Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton about wide receiver Devin Funchess' route running, Newton laughed and said, "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes. It's funny."

Dannon, the maker of Oikos yogurt, cut ties with spokesman Newton on Thursday. Company spokesperson Michael Neuwirth released a statement saying it was "shocked and disheartened" at Newton's comments.

Raiders' Carr returns to practice

• Oakland quarterback Derek Carr returned to the practice field Thursday, four days after breaking a bone in his back. Carr took snaps and threw passes. E.J. Manuel is expected to start Sunday against visiting Baltimore.

• The NFL said it is reviewing the conduct of Washington wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and Chiefs fans during and after Monday night's game in Kansas City, Mo. Pryor said on Instagram that he was the subject of racial slurs shouted by Chiefs fans, including after the game, when cellphone video captured Pryor flipping off Chiefs fans while he entered the tunnel.

Olympics: Carlos Nuzman, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, was arrested amid an investigation into a vote-buying scheme to bring the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.

NBA: Charlotte swingman Nicolas Batum will miss a minimum of six to eight weeks with a left elbow injury.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal took his season-leading 58th victory, beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open.
