Sports briefly: Argentina win sets up semifinal against U.S.

Lionel Messi scored a goal and added two assists in his first Copa America start this year to lead Argentina over Venezuela 4-1 on Saturday night and into a semifinal against the host United States.

With many in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., wearing No. 10 from Messi's national team and La Liga jerseys, the five-time FIFA Player of the Year scored in the 60th minute to give Argentina a 3-0 lead. It was his 54th in international play, tying the national record set by Gabriel Batistuta, according to Argentina's governing body. The Barcelona star also took over the Copa America scoring lead with his fourth goal of the tournament.

Argentina, 6-2-2 vs. the United States, now has two days to rest before playing. in Houston on Tuesday night. The Americans have been off since beating Ecuador on Thursday.

The other Copa America semifinal will match Colombia against Chile on Wednesday in Chicago, after defending champion Chile dismantled Mexico 7-0 Saturday night in Santa Clara, Calif. Eduardo Vargas scored four goals and Edson Puch added two as Mexico's best unbeaten streak in history ended in embarrassing fashion at 22 matches.

Chalked up another: Erik Jones, who won his sixth pole of the NASCAR Xfinity season on Saturday at Iowa Speedway. Joe Gibbs Racing has the top three spots on the grid.

Arrested: Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon. Appling already is facing a hearing on weapons and drug charges.

Non-fan: Former Indiana men's basketball coach Bob Knight, who told ESPN radio host Anita Marks at a sports memorabilia show on Saturday: "I never watch the NBA."

'Time for us to return home'

Pavel Datsyuk, who played 14 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings and won two Stanley Cups, announced he is heading home to play in the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League. "My family and I are grateful for our time here in Detroit," said Datsyuk, who has one year left on his contract. "This was not an easy decision, but it's time for us to return home."

Young German stops Federer short of final

Roger Federer's bid for a ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open came to an end in Halle, Germany, when he was beaten in the semifinals by rising German Alexander Zverev 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3. In the final Zverev faces Florian Mayer, who beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4. Federer still remains without a title in 2016.

• Andy Murray is one win away from becoming the first five-time champion at Queen's Club after he defeated fifth-seeded Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in London.

• American Madison Keys beat Carla Suarez Navarro 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) and advanced to the Aegon Classic final in Birmingham, England. Keys faces Barbora Strycova in the final after the Czech beat American CoCo Vandeweghe 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Ronaldo misses late penalty in 0-0 draw

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a late penalty as Portugal stumbled to a 0-0 draw with Austria, while Belgium swept to a 3-0 win over Ireland at the European Championship in France.

Iceland, which looked set to cause another shock by following up its draw against Portugal with a victory over Hungary — only for the tiny Scandinavian nation's team to concede a late own-goal and finish 1-1.

WNBA: Skylar Diggins had 27 points and Dallas overcame 38 points from DeWanna Bonner in a 115-111 triple-overtime victory at Phoenix. … Tayler Hill led a balanced attack with 15 points and Washington routed Atlanta 95-65 for the Mystics' first home win of the season.

LPGA: Defending champion Lexi Thompson shot a 5-under 66 for a share of the Meijer LPGA Classic lead with In Gee Chun in Belmont, Mich. Both are at 15-under 198.

Auto racing: Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg claimed the pole position for the European Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, after Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed out of qualifying. … William Byron, 18, held onto the lead on a late restart to win the NASCAR Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway for his second straight victory.
