Sports briefly: Alabama adds Chris Weinke to staff

March 2, 2017 at 5:05AM

Alabama hired former Cretin-Derham Hall and Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Chris Weinke as an offensive analyst, according to a Wednesday report from The Tuscaloosa News.

Weinke assumes the position after two seasons as a quarterbacks coach with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. He previously served as Bradenton IMG Academy's director of football for five years beforehand.

Weinke brings a wealth of experience and connections on the recruiting trail to Alabama, which has lost Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and former FSU quarterback Clint Trickett from its offensive staff in recent weeks.

Weinke, who played at FSU from 1997-2000 after a stint playing minor league baseball, led the Seminoles to the 1999 national championship and became the oldest player to win a Heisman Trophy in 2000 at 28 years old.

Florida State and Alabama will meet Sept. 2 in Atlanta to open the 2017 season.

Jeffery not franchised

The Chicago Bears decided not to apply the franchise tag to receiver Alshon Jeffery.

Jeffery played last season on the franchise tag after he and the Bears were unable to agree to a multiyear deal, making $15 million last year. He also served a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

... NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported that Colin Kaepernick's new agents have informed NFL teams that he will opt out of his contract with the 49ers when the window for him to do so opens Thursday.

... The NFL salary cap for the upcoming season will be $167 million per team, up more than $12 million over last year.

... A little more than one year after Johnny Manziel got dumped by agent Erik Burkhardt, the two seemed to have patched things up as the former Browns quarterback attempts an NFL comeback. Burkhardt fired Manziel as a client in February 2016 after the former Heisman Trophy winner was involved in an altercation with his then-girlfriend that resulted in a misdemeanor assault charge filed against him, the final straw in a string of aberrant behavior by Manziel that eventually resulted in the Browns cutting him.

... The Rams placed the franchise tag on cornerback Trumaine Johnson for the second consecutive year. ... The Browns declined to apply the franchise tag to receiver Terrelle Pryor.
