Southern Cal quarterback J.T. Daniels already had thrown for 215 yards before getting hurt on a blitz 27 seconds before halftime on Saturday night against Fresno State in Los Angeles.
Daniels, a sophomore, returned to the sideline on crutches for the second half, and the Trojans said Sunday he would miss the rest of the season because of a torn ligament and meniscus in his right knee.
Coach Clay Helton called the injury "gut-wrenching, when you see a kid that's poured so much into the game and into this team."
USC defeated Fresno State 31-23.
Fresno State plays the Gophers in its home opener this week. The Bulldogs had won 21 of their past 25 games under coach Jeff Tedford.
Louisville vs. Notre Dame
Scott Satterfield will make his Louisville head coaching debut Monday night at Cardinal Stadium against No. 9 Notre Dame (7 p.m., ESPN).
Satterfield makes the jump from a successful tenure at Appalachian State, where he went 51-24 in six seasons.
Notre Dame went 12-1 last season, losing to eventual champion Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
