South metro notebook: Former Shakopee football coach, 58, dies in accident

Randy D. Jones, who coached the Shakopee football team from 1995 to 2000, died on Thanksgiving morning in a home accident when the motor home he was working on rolled over on him.

Jones, 58, had several coaching stints throughout his career. He started at the Academy of Holy Angels before teaching at Shakopee and Simley. While with the Spartans, Jones taught adapted physical education and coached adapted bowling with his wife, Renita. Together, they won three state championships.

Carda named All-American

Lakeville North soccer player Temi Carda is one of four Minnesotans named as All-Americans by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Carda, who was a Ms. Soccer finalist, led the Panthers to the state quarterfinals where they lost to eventual champion Centennial 2-1. She has committed to play basketball at Creighton.

Hastings volleyball coach steps down

After 15 years with the Hastings volleyball program, Rita Girgen is resigning from her head coaching position. Girgen's successor has yet to be appointed by Raiders athletic director Trent Hanson.
