There's a certain toll-free number that I have given out many, many times this week. It's 1-877-243-8339. That's the number to call if you want Dex to send you the telephone directory, dead tree edition.

Because I failed to include that number with my Sunday column chronicling the slow death of the White Pages, people have called me to find out how they can get a phone book. They tend to be seniors, and many say they do not own computers.

People who do have computers e-mailed me to dispute the first line of my story, saying they still love darkroom chemicals and fax machines (and phone books).

No one so far has spoken up in favor of butter churns.
