Series preview: Gophers hockey vs. Minnesota Duluth

November 14, 2014 at 7:08AM

Gophers at a glance: The Gophers (7-1 overall) are coming off their best complete effort. They scored eight consecutive goals over two games and shut out previously ranked Notre Dame 5-0 in the series opener. Sophomore forward Vinni Lettieri didn't practice all week after being hit in the helmet with a puck during Sunday's 4-2 victory. Coach Don Lucia said Lettieri likely won't play, leaving the Gophers without three quality skaters — veterans Travis Boyd and Brady Skjei are the other two. Role players filled in well against Notre Dame and will be even more key this weekend.

Bulldogs at a glance: Minnesota Duluth (6-4, 4-2 NCHC) swept St. Cloud State last weekend after four split series. The Bulldogs are 4-1 on the road this season, including wins against ranked opponents Notre Dame, Minnesota State and the Huskies. The Gophers beat UMD 4-3 in the Ice Breaker Tournament in South Bend, Ind. Lakeville native Justin Crandall has eight points in the past eight games against the Gophers, and Austin Farley has six goals in six games. The Gophers have a 5-2-3 advantage against UMD over the past 10 meetings.

The Gophers played with more urgency, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from another conference sweep, and they lost LJ Mooney to injury in the process.
