Fans heading to sports events helped Metro Transit set a single-day ridership record on light-rail trains.
On Sept. 3, the Green and Blue lines provided more than 109,900 rides. It was the first time daily ridership topped the 100,000 mark, the agency said.
More than one-third of those rides were taken by fans going to the Gophers football game at TCF Bank Stadium, the Twins game at Target Field or the Saints baseball game at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul.
Event ridership on light rail has been strong this year, Metro Transit said. Saints fans took an estimated 52,990 Green Line rides to games at CHS Field, an average of 981 rides per game. Through the end of August, Twins fans had taken nearly 512,000 rides, a 14 percent increase over last year.
