MANKATO – The top-ranked Gophers women's hockey team scored four goals in the last 6 minutes, 2 seconds of the second period to blow open a close game and roll to a 5-0 victory over Minnesota State Mankato at All Seasons Arena on Sunday.
Senior Kelly Terry scored two goals and junior Rachel Ramsey recorded three assists. Sophomore Hannah Brandt added a goal and an assist for the Gophers (22-1-1, 16-1-1 WCHA), who completed a home-and-home sweep. The teams played the first game of the series, a 4-0 Gophers victory, outdoors Friday at TCF Bank Stadium as part of the Hockey City Classic.
Sophomore goalie Amanda Leveille made 19 saves against the Mavericks (9-17, 4-16) in her second consecutive shutout.
"I thought it was a great weekend here for us," coach Brad Frost said. "Obviously it was an exciting night on Friday, being outside, and now being down here in Mankato and getting a really solid win. Overall, it's a sweep on the weekend and we didn't give up a goal. That's a huge thing in the WCHA."
Terry gave the Gophers an early 1-0 lead, scoring off a feed from senior Bethany Brausen at the 2:14 mark of the first period. Terry made it 2-0 with a goal at 13:58 of the second, beginning a scoring barrage that also saw Brandt and juniors Meghan Lorence and Rachael Bona score.
Bona, Brandt and Terry share the team lead with 14 goals apiece.
