The St. Paul-based Schubert Club has once more signed up top musical talent for its International Artist Series at the Ordway Center.
The 2012-2013 season will include recitals by Finnish soprano Karita Mattila (Oct. 3), British pianist Stephen Hough (Nov. 20), American cellist Alisa Weilerstein (Jan. 8, 2013), American tenor James Valenti (Feb. 9, 2013) and German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter (March 11, 2013).
Mutter and Mattila have appeared with the Schubert Club before, but Hough, Valenti and Weilerstein will make their Schubert Club debuts.
Valenti is well known to fans of Minnesota Opera, where he has appeared in numerous productions, including the just-ended opera "Werther."
Also familiar to Twin Cities music lovers is Hough, who has recorded Tchaikovsky piano concertos with the Minnesota Orchestra. He played with the orchestra last fall in Minneapolis and at Carnegie Hall in New York. In addition to music of Brahms, Chopin and Schumann, Hough will perform his own Piano Sonata No. 2 at his Schubert Club date.
Weilerstein also has played with the Minnesota Orchestra, including its three-city European tour in 2010. Early last year, she showed her versatility when she played solo cello suites of Bach as well as a new work with Gabriel Kahane at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.
Mattila has had one previous Schubert Club recital, in 2007, and Mutter performed in the International Artist Series in 1991 and 2006.
