LeBron James will sit out the rest of the season, ending his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers said Saturday that holding James out would allow his groin to fully heal. They added that James would accompany the team on its upcoming road trip to New Orleans and Oklahoma City.

James was hurt in a victory over Golden State on Christmas, the first significant injury of his career. He sat out 17 games before returning on Jan. 31, and the Lakers were unable to recover and make the playoffs.

It's the first time James won't play in the postseason since 2005, when he was in his second NBA season with Cleveland. He had appeared in the last eight NBA Finals.

Brooklyn 110, Boston 96: D'Angelo Russell scored 29 points, leading the host Nets to a victory over the Celtics, who were without starters Kyrie Irving (back) and Al Horford (knee).

Houston 119, Sacramento 108: James Harden had 50 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 42nd career triple-double to help the Rockets beat the Kings in Houston. He also made seven three-pointers to become the ninth player in NBA history to reach 2,000 career threes.

L.A. Clippers 132, Cleveland 108: Montrezl Harrell scored 23 points and the host Clippers beat the Cavaliers to move within one-half game of the Spurs for the West's fifth seed.

Detroit 99, Portland 90: Reggie Jackson scored 28 points, Andre Drummond had 22 points and 19 rebounds, and the host Pistons ended the Blazers' six-game winning streak. Detroit was without Blake Griffin (knee).

Orlando 121, Indiana 116: Aaron Gordon had 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and the Magic racked up a season-high 37 assists in its win over the Pacers.

Miami 100, New York 92: Dion Waiters scored 28 points, Dwyane Wade added 16 in his last game at Madison Square Garden, and the Heat beat the Knicks.

Toronto 124, Chicago 101: Serge Ibaka had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Fred VanVleet also scored 23 and the Raptors routed the host Bulls for their third straight win despite playing without Kawhi Leonard (personal reasons) and Pascal Siakam (rest).

Note

• The NBA set a record for three-pointers made for the seventh consecutive year, after the 25,808th of the season was made Saturday. The league is on pace for about an 8 percent rise in three-pointers over last season — and threes are getting made a staggering 57 percent more often than was the case just five years ago.
