Highlight Reel

Kiffin's weird debut

Bloomington Jefferson alumnus Lane Kiffin's debut at Florida Atlantic lasted nearly six hours, featured three lightning delays and ended with almost no one left in the stands. It was unforgettable. It was also unsuccessful, with his Owls losing 42-19 to Navy in a game that ended at 1:47 a.m. Eastern time Saturday.

Atypical extra point

Jake Olson, No. 4 USC's long-snapper who lost his sight eight years ago, delivered a clean extra-point snap for the Trojans with 3:13 left during their win over Western Michigan. Olson was blinded by retinal cancer. The lifelong Trojans fan joined the team under a scholarship for disabled athletes and uses a teammate to line him up for snaps in practice. He hadn't played until Saturday.

Pettway among 3 benched

No. 12 Auburn played sans tailback Kamryn Pettway, backup quarterback Sean White and wide receiver Kyle Davis on Saturday vs. Georgia Southern. Coach Gus Malzahn said the suspensions were "completely between me and them," with Pettway and Davis set to return for Week 2. White will be out until Week 3.

Gamble would have paid off

In the upset no one saw coming, including Las Vegas oddsmakers, Howard — quarterbacked by Cam Newton's brother Caylin Newton — defeated host UNLV 43-40 on Saturday. Had a gambler placed a $100 money line bet on that outcome, he or she would have walked away with $71,500. Howard was a 45-point underdog.
