Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes spark Twitter debate over 'No. 1 cause of divorce'

If you thought infidelity, financial stress or growing apart were the most common reasons for divorce, then let Eva Mendes set you straight.

The 41-year-old actress and new mother claims sloppy fashion choices are to blame.

"You can't do sweatpants. No," Mendes told Extra on Thursday. "Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America? Sweatpants. No. Can't do that."

While countless clothing companies didn't agree, neither did Mendes' longtime boyfriend Ryan Gosling, and he took to Twitter to defend his personal fashion choices.

"Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That's right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter," wrote the actor.

Gosling's response to his "The Place Beyond the Pines" co-star and the mother of his daughter, Esmeralda, sparked a rally cry of support across social media as Twitter followers weighed in on Mendes' verbal faux pas.
