Rules for rentals
Explore Minnesota has a list of vacation rentals that comply with applicable licensing and regulations at www.exploreminnesota .com/vacation-home-rental.
Here are some of things that the Minnesota Department of Health will be looking at during inspections of private vacation rentals:
• A conditional use permit or approval from the local government that gives rental approval.
• Certificate of compliance for sewage systems.
• Drinking water safety.
• Sleeping room sizes, location and egress.
• Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in all rooms.
• Fire extinguishers.
• Swimming pools and hot tubs.
Generally, private vacation rentals that only rent for a week or more are exempt. For those who already have booked time at a vacation rental, or are thinking about it, the Health Department encourages people to continue with their plans, but contact the department if they have a complaint.
