Given another shot at winning the HSBC Champions, Rory McIlroy delivered his best shot of the day.

McIlroy birdied the first playoff hole, the par-5 No. 18, and defeated Xander Schauffele in the World Golf Championships event Sunday in Shanghai.

McIlroy closed with a 4-under 68, but he had to scrounge for par on No. 18 after his drive stopped in rough a foot from a water hazard. Schauffele birdied two of the last four holes for a 66 to force a playoff at 19-under 269.

When they returned to No. 18 for the playoff, Schauffele hit his tee shot into thick rough, laid up and missed a 12-foot birdie putt. McIlroy went driver, 4-iron to 25 feet and two putts.

"Over the last few years ... for the most part, I've been able to get the best out of myself when I've needed it," McIlroy said.

Balotelli, who is black, was playing for Brescia against Verona in Italy's Serie A. He was visibly upset as he fought for the ball at the end of the stadium from which "monkey" chants were emanating, then picked up the ball with his hands, drop-kicked it into the crowd and indicated he was leaving. Teammates and opponents embraced him and persuaded him to stay.

On Instagram, Balotelli thanked those opponents who supported him. "You've shown yourself to be real men, not like those who deny the evidence," he said.
