Rookies win Rookie Challenge for first time in eight years...and Jonny Flynn isn't going to let Kevin Love forget it

Tyreke Evans and DeJuan Blair -- the fourth and 37th players selected in last summer's draft -- were the stars of the rookie team's 140-128 victory over the sophomores in Dallas.

And it ended with Wolves rookie Jonny Flynn riding off on Blair's back in celebration after the youngsters won for only the third time in 11 tries.

"The rest of the season," Flynn said, referring to teammate and sophomore opponent Kevin Love. "He's going to hear about this for the rest of the season."

Flynn played 17:40, scored nine points and has seven assists.

But did he get to his spots and organize the offense?

When asked that -- catch phrases in the triangle offense -- Flynn laughed during a phone conversation after tonight's game and said, "There wasn't none of that. We were running and gunning. It was good to go out and do that for a full game. That's fun."

Love played 18 minutes, scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds after not being chosen for the game last season as a rookie, a decision made by NBA assistant coaches that stung him for months.

Both players came off the bench. It didn't take Love very long to hook up with former UCLA teammate Russell Westbrook.

He hit him with a 60-foot outlet pass, just like they did for one season in Westwood.

The secret to their success together, then and now?

Gumbo.

Gumbo?

Yep, that apparently is their code word when they're both thinking of hooking up on one of those long passes.

"Oh, yeah, we have a little thing we say to each other," Love said. "Gumbo."

The back story:

They were in adidas camp in New Orleans the summer before Love's only collegiate season.

"That's all we ate there," Love said. "That's probably why I have the body type I have."

Whenever they went in their only college season, they searched for good gumbo.

Did they find it in Pullman, Wash?

"Well," Love said, "No."

It became their own catch phrase.

"It's something different, other than saying `outlet pass,' " Love said. "You kind of had to be there for it to seem funny, which is probably why I haven't told the story before."
