Replay: Gophers beat Michigan 30-14

The recap: The Gophers drove from their 1-yard line and kicked a 24-yard field goal for a 10-7 halftime lead. They forced Michigan quarterback Shane Morris into two third-quarter turnovers — including a 30-yard pick-six for De'Vondre Campbell — and pulled away.

What was learned: Michigan is 2-3 and coach Brady Hoke could eventually get fired, but after going 1-22 in their past 23 games against the Wolverines, the Gophers dominated this one. Back from injury, Mitch Leidner looked like the quarterback the Gophers hoped he could be.

• David Cobb's 183 rushing yards gave him 722 for the season, which ranks third in the nation behind Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah (833) and Pittsburgh's James Conner (790).

• Freshman kicker Ryan Santoso, who entered 1-for-3 on field goal tries, made all three attempts — from 24, 48 and 25 yards. He also ranks fourth in the nation in touchback percentage with 19 touchbacks in 25 kickoffs (76 percent).

• With Marcus Jones out because of a broken hand, freshman punt returner Craig James had four returns for 66 yards, including a 32-yarder.

• The Gophers started all five of their third-quarter drives in Michigan territory and outscored the Wolverines 17-0 that quarter.

The skinny: Northwestern changed its downtrodden story Saturday with a 29-6 upset at Penn State. The Wildcats were 1-7 in the Big Ten last year, lost several key players before the season and opened with losses to Cal and Northern Illinois. But Penn State has struggled to run the ball this season, and Northwestern's defense pounced. Wildcats quarterback Trevor Siemian ran for three touchdowns and passed for 258 yards. Northwestern plays host to Wisconsin next week, while the Gophers have a bye.
