WASHINGTON -- Rep. Keith Ellison has circulated a petitition to try and get GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump to try to tone down his negative rhetoric against Muslims -- it has generated almost 9,000 signatures so far.

Earlier this week, Trump called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States. It has since been denounced by his Republican competitors vying to become president as well as leadership at the Republican National Committee.

Ellison, co-chair of the Progressive Caucus, was the first Muslim to be elected to Congress.

His email, circulated by his campaign account earlier Wednesday, was addressed to Trump:

"Your campaign has become an exercise in appealing to fear, hatred and Islamophobia and your proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the country is un-American. Time and time again, you have demonstrated disdain for the core American value of religious freedom. This is not what our country needs right now. Americans will reaffirm our core values of tolerance and inclusion. But your demagoguery hurts us all. So please, do the right thing and stop the religious fear-mongering once and for all."
