The Washington Redskins signed seven-time Pro Bowler Adrian Peterson to a one-year deal, pending a physical.

The former Viking spent 10 seasons in Minnesota before splitting time in New Orleans and Arizona during 2017. He signed a two-year deal with the Saints but was traded to the Cardinals on Oct. 10 and was released at the end of the season. But despite his accolades — Peterson, a four-time all pro selection and 2012 NFL MVP, is 12th on the all-time rushing yards list — he remained unsigned after posting only 529 rushing yards in 10 games last year.

Roughly two hours before news of Peterson's imminent signing broke, the Redskins' second-round pick, rookie running back Derrius Guice, tweeted a photo from a Florida hospital, where he's set to undergo knee surgery. The promising playmaker tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of the Redskins' preseason opener in New England. And over the past two weeks, the position group has been dealt more injury blows.

Samaje Perine (sprained ankle) and Byron Marshall (lower leg) were injured in Washington's second preseason game against the Jets and rookie Martez Carter was waived with an injury designation on Saturday. That left running backs coach Randy Jordan with only three healthy players in practice this past weekend: Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Kapri Bibbs.

The organization also hosted former Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and former Giants running back Orleans Darkwa for workouts but didn't sign either player. Following Sunday's practice, coach Jay Gruden said he wasn't looking for a starter, but rather he wanted more depth at the position.

"We want to bring them in to get physicals on them just in case," Gruden said, when specifically asked of Charles and Peterson. "Like I said, we have had very unlucky situations with our running backs with obviously Guice and Marshall and Samaje. If something else happens, we are going to be really, really, really thin."

Peterson has amassed 12,276 rushing yards in his career and rushed for a career-high 2,097 during his MVP season in 2012. But the veteran has been beset by injuries since then. After rushing for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Vikings in 2015, Peterson has rushed for 601 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games the past two seasons.

Packers thin at RB

Injuries and unexpected developments have left Green Bay thin at running back with just two camp practices and two games left in the preseason.

Only Ty Montgomery, who has overcome injury issues in the past, and little-known halfback Joel Bouagnon have made it through camp unscathed. The Packers were forced to sign Bronson Hill and LeShun Daniels over the weekend to replenish depth.

Hill spent two games on Arizona's 53-man roster after bouncing around a host of practice squads. Daniels played four games for Washington last season.

A hamstring injury has forced Aaron Jones to miss most of camp. Jones, who has yet to play in a preseason game after a breakout rookie season, will miss the Sept. 9 regular-season opener against Chicago and the Sept. 16 game against Minnesota after being suspended by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Bears hurting

The Bears are uncertain whether outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and tight end Adam Shaheen will be available to start the regular season after suffering injuries Saturday in a 24-23 preseason win at Denver. Floyd underwent surgery Sunday to repair a broken bone in his right hand. Coach Matt Nagy said that Floyd's hand won't be healed by the Sept. 9 season opener at Green Bay but that Floyd may play through the injury. Shaheen sprained his right ankle and the severity was still being determined.

Ravens 20, Colts 19

Joe Flacco threw a touchdown pass in the first half, Lamar Jackson added another in the second half and the Ravens ruined Andrew Luck's Indianapolis homecoming by topping the Colts 20-19.

Flacco looked sharp, going 7-for- 9 for 72 yards.

Jackson then showed flashes of what helped him win the 2016 Heisman Trophy. He was 7-for-15 for 49 yards and carried four times for 26 yards.

But Colts fans wanted to see what Luck would do for an encore following a solid start in their preseason opener at Seattle.

This time, Luck had a tough night. He threw an interception before logging his first completion, took a hard hit from Terrell Suggs on the first of two sacks and only led Indy on one scoring drive — setting up 45-year-old Adam Vinateiri for a 57-yard field goal.

Luck was six of 13 for 50 yards, no touchdowns and an interception with a passer rating of 24.5.
