STUTTGART, Germany — Red Bull driver Mark Webber says he is leaving Formula 1 to race Porsche sports cars next season.

The Australian says in a statement that he has signed a contract with the German company "that extends over several years" and that he will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours and World Endurance Championship next year.

The 36-year-old Webber says he is looking forward to the "new challenge after my time in Formula 1" and "can hardly wait to pilot one of the fastest sports cars in the world."

Webber has achieved nine race victories and 36 podium places in F1. He has already raced at Le Mans twice.
