Quick Q&A: Rachel Shumway, Mahtomedi soccer

October 12, 2013 at 9:51PM

With two other Division I players — Megan Koenig and Chelsey Henry — on the roster, the high-scoring Shumway doesn't get noticed as frequently as a player with her offensive skills (18 goals, four assists) should.

College choice? North Dakota. There were people from my high school there, and I always heard good things. My dad and I went to Grand Forks and I loved the campus.

High school or club soccer? I like them both. In high school, it's nice to get away from the club team. But the season is shorter. You don't have as much time to get to know your teammates.

Personal scouting report: What makes me different is that I'm very good in the air. I score a lot of goals off headers. And I have pretty good speed.

Best soccer memory: Last year we played White Bear Lake and I scored a goal on their All-American goalie, Tarah Hobbs. She's at Minnesota now. That was fun.

If you couldn't play soccer … Soccer is a big part of my life. It's part of my everyday routine. I don't what I'd do with that free time.

Getting away from soccer: I like to hang out with friends. And I have a job at Khan's [Mongolian Barbecue] in Roseville. The biggest mistake people make is not using enough sauce. That's the most important thing.
