quick q&a

MICHAEL MATHESON

Matheson will lead the Cougars (18-4-0) to the wrestling team state tournament on Thursday. Centennial lost in the quarterfinals last year.

Q: How much motivation does the team have from the first-round exit at state last year?

A: It gives us a lot of motivation, just to go out there and give it our all, everything we've got every time.

Q: Is it exciting to lead the team this year as a senior captain?

A: It's very exciting. [It's my] last year on the team, and just to have everybody have fun at state and get to witness what I've witnessed before.

Q: Are you preparing any differently for state this time after last year's appearance?

A: Not really. We just have our normal Monday-Tuesday practices, and we kind of crank it up … and then just kind of settle down as the week goes on so we can be healthy.

Q: Is Centennial a young team or is there a lot of experience this year?

A: We're pretty young. There's only three seniors on the team right now and the rest are juniors. There's a couple freshman, and like one sophomore, but most of them haven't had any state experience.

Q: What do you tell your younger teammates who are heading to state for the first time?

A: I think it's definitely more mental. The environment at state, you can get overwhelmed, but you just have to relax and not even think about whoever is watching. You just have to go out there and compete.
