Puerto Rico extends Stars' slide

July 29, 2012 at 4:18AM

The Minnesota Stars lost their third match in a row Saturday night, falling 1-0 to the Puerto Rico Islanders at the Bayamon Soccer Complex in a match of two contradicting halves.

Islanders captain Noah Delgado rolled the only goal of the match past goalkeeper Matt VanOekel in the 48th minute following a careless clearance attempt by Minnesota.

The Stars dominated possession in the first half with strong one-touch soccer led by forwards Simone Bracalello and Martin Nunez. The Stars had eight corner kicks in the half.

"I think we played very well in the first half, and I'm proud of the guys," Minnesota head coach Manny Lagos said. "I think we just lost some confidence from not finishing and putting the game away, and it's unfortunate when things don't go well."

A late yellow card issued to Justin Davis means he will have to sit out next weekend's match at Edmonton. Midfielder Miguel Ibarra will face a minimum of a one-week suspension after getting a red card in the second minute of stoppage time.

Saints top Quebec Luke Anderson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Saints defeated the Quebec les Capitales for the second consecutive night, 6-2 at Midway Stadium.

Anderson allowed one hit in six innings, walking three and striking out eight. The three hits allowed by the Saints matched a season low.

Ronnie Bourquin went 4-for-4 for the Saints, with a two-run homer and three RBI.

Carr underwent Tommy John surgery in 2009.
