LOS ANGELES — Legendary radio broadcaster Casey Kasem has died, according to his family and publicist. He was 82.
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends," read a Facebook posting from daughter Kerri.
"Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken," the posting continued." Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad."
Kasem became known nationally to millions over the years for his weekly Top 40 countdown of the latest rock hits. He also was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."
Last week, a judge ruled that Kasem should be fed, hydrated and medicated while a court-appointed attorney evaluates the health of the ailing radio personality after his daughter moved to implement end-of-life measures.
Kasem, who had dementia, was in critical condition before his death in a Washington state hospital.
Kerri Kasem, who has been placed in temporary control of his treatment, consulted with doctors and decided in recent days to stop giving her father food, water and medications, attorneys said in court.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ruled that Casey Kasem should receive the treatments while an attorney appointed by the judge meets with Kasem and his doctors.
Kasem was admitted to the hospital with an infected bedsore.
