HE'S GOLDEN
If Hollywood ever grants an award for coolest, calmest entertainer, it should go to Ricky Gervais. The star and co-creator of the "The Office" and "Extras" was laid back and laconic in Hollywood this week, despite the fact that Sunday's Golden Globes Awards show (7 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11) was just around the corner and he's hosting.
"I'm pretty calm because I've got really low standards," said Gervais, who was promoting an animated version of his wildly popular podcast show for HBO at the TV Critics Association's winter press tour. "I'm going to be drunk. Everyone else is."
Gervais, wearing a black T-shirt and jeans while propping up his feet on a small glass table, vowed to tease all celebrities in the room Sunday who are more successful than he is. "That will be everyone," he said. "Unless Mickey Rooney shows up."
It is hoped that Gervais can spike the ratings of the Globes telecast, which hasn't had a formal host in more than a decade. If he's as funny as he was when we talked with him, that should be no problem.
Gervais fans who want to see him as more than a host should be pleased to hear that the star is contemplating an appearance next season on the American version of "The Office."
"We might do something," he said. "Right now it's just in our heads."
