Mounds View heads back to Class 2A state tourney

Using a formula that has lifted it to No. 1 in the Class 2A rankings — overwhelming doubles and depth at singles — Mounds View beat Maple Grove 5-2 to win its second consecutive Section 5 championship. The Mustangs will make their 12th state tournament appearance in the past 14 years.

Maple Grove, the team that interrupted Mounds View streak of 10 consecutive state tournament berths by winning back-to-back section titles in 2012 and 2013, got its points at Nos. 1 and 2 singles from Charlie Adkins and Sam Hochberger.

Mounds View won at Nos. 3 and 4 singles (Hunter Heck and Petro Alex) and swept the doubles, losing just one game over three matches.

"Our doubles will take us as far as we will go [in the state tournament], " said Mounds View coach Mike Cartwright, whose team improved to 19-1 this season. "We haven't lost since the first week when Wayzata beat us. This team is as good as any we've had since 2005, when we won the state championship."

• SECTION 2AA FINAL: Minnetonka advanced to the state tournament for the third year in a row and avenged an earlier loss, beating Shakopee 4-3 — the same score as in their loss to the Sabers on May 4. The Skippers swept the doubles matches and clinched the match when freshman Ben Wheaton defeated Raja Arul 7-6, 7-6. Minnetonka has been Class 2A runner-up t to Wayzata the past two seasons.

BASEBALL

• CHASKA 3, MINNETONKA 2: Freshman Jose Hidalgo scored from third base on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, lifting No. 2, 3A Chaska past No. 11 Minnetonka in the regular-season finale for both teams. Minnetonka had tied the score 2-2 in the previous inning on Fox Leum's two-run double. With the victory, Chaska (17-3) likely clinched the top seed in the Section 2 playoffs.
