Moore continues to build her MVP resume

Lynx are peaking as playoffs near

September 1, 2013 at 3:48AM

Before we get to some post-game analysis of the Lynx team in general, let's talk about the August Maya Moore just had.

In 12 games Moore shot 101-for-178 (56.7 percent) overall, 30-for-60 on three-pointers and averaged 21.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Can you say MVP?

In her last two home games she had scored 65 points, posting her two career high scoring totals in the process. The Lynx, meanwhile, have rebounded from a mini-slump and have won four straight games heading into Wednesday's showdown with Los Angeles.

Seattle coach Brian Agler called Minnesota the best team in the Western Conference at this point. When talking about Moore, here's what he said:

"She is really playing at a good speed for herself," Agler said. "I have sort of been watching her play. I didn't see the other game when she had her big night (35 vs. Indiana), but tonight she just sort of got real comfortable and (she was) playing at a good pace for her. She is so versatile she can really catch and shoot, post up. She is feeling it right now and really good players can get to that (point). I have seen multiple players get to that at certain times. I have seen (Seimone) Augustus like that. Tina Thompson can get like that. The great ones have the knack. She is obviously in that groove right now.''

Here are some other thoughts on tonight's game.

--In typical Cheryl Reeve fashion, the Lynx coach came out after the game and complained about her team's first-quarter defense. Always looking for more, Reeve is. But her team listened. Seattle scored 26 points in the first quarter. They scored 16 each over the final three.

--Moore has had six games this season in which she has four or more three-pointers made.

--It was a big night for the Lynx bench. Monica Wright played very well, with 10 points and seven assists. Rookie Rachel Jarry had a career-high 14 points and she played some nice defense on Thompson.

--The Lynx have a bit of a kangaroo court going. Seems every time a player does something particularly impressive they get a good-natured fine. After the game several players noted that center Janel McCarville – who has the play of the night, a between-the-legs pass to Lindsay Whalen for a driving layup – was in some big trouble.

--The Lynx turned 14 Seattle turnovers in 25 points. Minnesota also had a season-high 41 field goals made.

That's about it for now. Have a great rest of your holiday weekend.
