The pair of Gophers hockey wins, women's and men's, on Saturday reminded college hockey why each is ranked No. 1 in the country.
For at least one more day, the Gophers women defied the idea that North Dakota would break their now 62-game winning streak by blowing out their rival 6-1.
Two hours later, next door at Mariucci Arena, the Gophers men showed off their depth with backup goaltender Michael Shibrowski's 3-0 shutout of in-state rival Minnesota State.
It's becoming tougher for Gophers men's coach Don Lucia to pick a lineup each night, he said. The freshman class is challenging the older guys for jobs, which he likes, and on Saturday night he gave defenseman Jake Bischoff a chance to play in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Bischoff responded by scoring the game's first goal.
Gophers women's coach Brad Frost is also benefitting from his freshmen class. Megan Wolfe scored her first two collegiate goals on Saturday afternoon to spark a four-goal second period. Last weekend at St. Cloud State, freshman Dani Cameranesi scored the game-tying goal in a late comeback to extend the streak.
