Picks of the week

Sunday There have been a lot of great documentaries in recent years, so you're forgiven if you somehow missed 2006's "Jesus Camp" (9 p.m., A&E), a behind-the-scenes look at an evangelical Christian program for youths in, of all places, Devil's Lake, N.D. Depending on how you feel about the movement, it's either chilling or inspiring.

Monday Those inclined to spend New Year's Eve in front of the telly have a wide range of options. There's "New Year's Eve With Anderson Cooper" (10 p.m., CNN), featuring a serious version of Dick Clark; "New Year's Eve With Carson Daly" (11:35 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11), starring a flippant version of Dick Clark, and "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2008" (11:35 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5), in which most of the hosting duties belong to Ryan Seacrest, the heir to Dick Clark. Younger viewers can turn to "New Year's Eve Live" (11 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9) with host Cat Deeley and a couple of "American Idol" performers, or "Tila Tequila's New Year's Eve Masquerade 2008" (10 p.m., MTV), which sounds almost as painful as a real tequila shot.

Tuesday Well, that was fast. Just a little over a week since its last season finale, "The Biggest Loser" (7 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11) returns, this time with couples competing together. By the way, did you catch that "fast" reference? Huh? Too subtle for you? Let's try again: Guess we're starving for more of this reality show. What about that one? Hey, these are desperate times. ...

Wednesday "Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil and the Presidency" (8 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2) examines a fascinating leader who doesn't get much mention but who played a huge role in how the democratic system works -- or doesn't work -- today. One quibble: Martin Sheen is way too intense as the narrator. This isn't "Apocalypse Now," Marty!

Thursday I can't think of a more fit way to kick off "Celebrity Apprentice" (8 p.m. KARE, Ch. 11) than to have the contestants, who include Nadia Comaneci, Lennox Lewis and Gene Simmons, sell wieners on the street. Attention junkies moving junk food. Perfect.
