A half-dozen cool things in music, from two points of view:

Vintage Trouble, the Varsity. For the final show of its tour, V.T. returned to Minneapolis to headline at a proper venue. Not only is it one of the most energetic bands touring today, but Ty Taylor may be the most energetic frontman in the business.

Pearl Jam, Xcel Energy Center. Having never seen Pearl Jam live, I was not disappointed by this three-hour show. Eddie Vedder is a superstar, supported by very talented musicians. Despite a little too much chatter from Eddie, I'd definitely see Pearl Jam again.

Roots, Rock and Deep Blues, Patrick's Cabaret. Five stages with 50 acts for $15: One of the metro's best entertainment values and a benefit for neighborhood businesses that truly support the arts.

Ruthie Foster, Dakota. When she got lost in song, she lived up to the title of "Phenomenal Woman." That tune was a highlight, along with "Ring of Fire" and "Bring It on Home to Me" with guest Willie Walker.

Mammojam, Mill City Nights. A breast-cancer benefit staged by country station BUZ'N (102.9 FM), this guitar pull ended up with an all-male lineup because Shawna Thompson of Thompson Square was ill. Her hubby, Keifer, was hilarious doing the falsetto female vocals. Long on personality, Scotty McCreery and Brett Eldredge had the women swooning.

"On Tour With Leonard Cohen," photos by Sharon Robinson. As a backup singer with a camera, Robinson not only had incredible access but also a great eye. My favorite photo: Cohen, in a long winter coat, feeding a machine at a laundromat.
